Denis Pitman to Run as Write-in Candidate for County Commissioner

Denis Pitman will run as a write-in candidate for Yellowstone County Commissioner

County Commissioner Denis Pitman isn’t ready to give up quite yet.

Having lost his primary bid to be the Republican candidate on the November General Election ballot, incumbent county commissioner, Denis Pitman, is registering as a write-in candidate. Pitman said that he is registering so voters have an option, and so that the votes will count for all those who have said they will be writing in his name on the General Election ballot. Write-in votes do not count unless the candidate has registered with the Elections Department. So, all those votes for Mickey Mouse do not get counted.

That’s the extent of what he is going to do, said Pitman in a recent interview. From here on it has to be a grassroots effort, he said.

Pitman concedes that it is a long shot that he could still win over Republican Mark Morse who pulled out the primary upset. Pitman said that he has been researching how many write-in candidates have ever won any election, and there aren’t many.

However, there is some potential for him to succeed since Democrat voters were not able to vote in the Republican primary, but will be able to vote him in the general election. There was no Democrat candidate for the county commission position. With 44,605 voters turning out in the primary race, Morse defeated Pitman by about 2300 votes, 14,713 to 12,406.
