Volunteers’ Election Issues on Agenda For Commissioners

by Evelyn Pyburn

Be careful what you wish for. Many election officials across the state may well identify with that age-old adage following years of frustrations in not having enough volunteers to help with elections, only to find themselves, this year, overwhelmed with citizens volunteering to be election judges and poll watchers.

With dozens of citizens having spent time working and observing the General Election on November 8, many of them have concerns and recommendations for Yellowstone County Commissioners, according to Peggy Miller, Laurel.  She asked the commissioners to hold a public meeting to listen to and discuss the election process, which she said involved “numerous, blatant violations of election law.”

On Tuesday, County Commissioners set a public meeting for Tuesday, December 13, at 9:30 am in the Stillwater Building, Room 3108.

Citizens asked certification of the General Election be delayed until after that meeting. “It is imperative for the preservation of election integrity that NO CERTIFICATION should be done until an outside review and forensic audit has been performed,” wrote Miller, in an appeal to several state officials.

Commissioner John Ostlund explained that the commissioners “do not have an option to wait.” The date is set by the state legislature. The county certified the election on November 22. The State must now certify election results.
